Homeschooling Laws

Homeschooling is legal everywhere in the USA. However, the laws from state to state very greatly. Some states require homeschoolers to register with the state, some do not. Some states require homeschoolers to do so many hours per year, others do not. Some states require the educators to be certified others do not. Some states require the children to take standardized testing and others do not. Some test require certain subject to be taught, others do not.

So how do I know what MY state requires? Well one good site to check out is HSLDA: State Laws.

Homeschooling Mistakes You Must Not Make

It’s the choice of most parents today, simply because it is a surefire way to make sure that your child gets educated in the best and most creative way possible. Most people have come around to realizing that formal schooling tends to stifle children and their natural abilities, which is why they wish to take their child’s education into their own hands and homeschool them. They are of the opinion that when a child is left to grow up without too many formal rules and regulations, he or she is free of the blinders that force horses to look straight ahead and nowhere else.

Homeschooling has its share of supporters and detractors, but that is not what we are interested in now. The point I’m trying to make is that systems work as long as you believe in them. So if you think that homeschooling is the best way for your child to learn, you must throw yourself into the task with all your heart. And to do this, here are a few homeschooling mistakes you must avoid making:

  • Don’t thrust your dreams and ideas on your child: The very idea of homeschool is to allow your child to grow and develop according to his/her temperament. When you force your child to listen to all that you say and adhere to a schedule that is as rigid as the one set at formal schools, you are defeating the very purpose of homeschooling your youngster. Give them a free rein, with enough rope to reel them in when they stray too far away. Only then do you allow their creativity to unfold and flourish the way it should.
  • Don’t neglect the power of organization: While it’s true that homeschooling is an unstructured form of learning that seeks to expand a child’s horizons through natural methods, there is no rule that says that organization is a bad word. The key to getting homeschooling right is to infuse a sense of organization into the randomness of lessons and other activities that are a part of a homeschooling curriculum. If your kids don’t learn the value of organization, they are never going to be able to manage time efficiently.
  • Don’t try to do it all on your own: Perhaps you’ve chosen to homeschool your child because you don’t trust the education system or teachers to do it effectively and efficiently. But that does not mean that you should go it alone, even when the going gets tough. There will be days when you feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the task and yearn for some help. Don’t feel ashamed to ask friends and family members to offer their services when you need a break, because if you don’t, you are going to take out your frustration on your kids which is going to set them back mentally and academically.

Homeschool your kids wisely and with as few mistakes as possible, and watch them grow into well-balanced and smart adults.
